I am 20 years old living in Dublin. I am currently studying climate and environmental sustainability in DCU. I am looking forward to starting this challenge.
My challenge
My challenge is to become vegetarian! with a focus on buying locally.

I have been thinking about the beliefs that I have and how they might differ from other peoples. When discussing being vegetarian with people, a lot of them have the belief that your body will not be as strong. For example, I was told by a man I worked with that I will be too weak to do anything if I stay vegetarian. This is his belief, and although I do not agree with it, I was interested in hearing why he thought this. My beliefs are very different to this, and I think eating a vegetarian/plant based diet is very healthy. Being a vegetarian is linked to having lower cholesterol levels and less of a chance of getting cancer. It is challenging to change a persons beliefs. I feel by having educating conversations, people may take time to think about why their beliefs are important to them. For instance, when I explained to my coworker the impact of eating meat on the environment, he did not know how damaging it was. This may lead to him developing different beliefs about being vegetarian.

I have found this week to be quite challenging. I have found myself to have little motivation but I am still pushing through. I have taken the time to educate myself more about the effects the meat industry has on our planet. This makes the challenge feel worthwhile. I have been trying some of the recipes from other blog posts which has really helped me too. Since the challenge is nearly over, I am making more of a conscious effort to talk about this challenge to people around me. It has been interesting to see the response. I have noticed a lot of older people are more negative towards it.

I cant believe 15 days have already passed so far! i am proud that I have stuck on track with not eating meat. I am enjoying exploring alternatives and learning new recipes. Looking at recipes other people posted on their blogs have inspired me to go out of my comfort zone. I have decided that after this challenge I will try my best to not consume any meat. I read that eating a vegetarian diet has 2.5 x less carbon emissions than a meat diet. knowing that I am helping the planet in a little way keeps me motivated to continue. I commend people who are vegan but my love for cheese and eggs is too strong! maybe in the future I will slowly move towards a vegan diet. I have converted to oak milk for my coffees and cereal which is a good change.

I Hope everyone is enjoying their challenge 🙂

I have been finding it hard the past few days to keep up the challenge. There has been some moments when I nearly caved and ate meat but i stopped myself!. On days where I get home late I often end up relying on frozen foods. Im trying my best to not rely on these type of foods as I feel they dont give you a lot of energy. I have had some interesting conversations with family and friends about the challenge. Some of my family who eat meat have realised the intensity of how the meat industry is effecting the climate. Im hoping these conversations will encourage them to cut down their meat intake. A lot of my friends are already vegetarian which has definitely helped in motivating me to stay on track. I also find it super encouraging to read the other peoples blogs and challenges. It has shown me that there will often be days when you dont want to push through, and that we are all in this together.

I have been doing this challenge for 8 days now. I definitely have felt a lot healthier. I am trying to cook vegetarian meals for my family. My dad is very skeptical when it comes to me being vegetarian. I think there is just a generational difference. He doesn’t understand why people who are vegetarian want to eat ‘meat type foods’ such as burgers and fake mince/chicken products. I try to explain to him that people who don’t eat meat still like to enjoy conventional foods, just without the killing animals part!. I am hoping to get my family to eat 2 veggie meals a week, but this might take some time.

I have decided to become vegetarian for this challenge. This is something I have tried in the past but I found it hard to stick to, especially when eating out. So far it has been going well, and I feel like I have a lot more energy from eating healthier than what I usually eat. I also want to try buy my veggies from my local farmers market instead of prepackaged ones which use unnecessary plastic. Im excited to share recipes with the other people who are also trying out being veggie for this month! I hope everyone enjoys this challenge and understands the importance of how making small changes can help our planet.
